Winter Seed Sowing Program: Growing Native Plants for a Resilient Future The Winter Seed Sowing Program invites community members to discover the power of native plants—and the surprising benefits of starting them outdoors during the coldest months of the year. This hands-on educational program teaches participants how to use natural winter conditions to germinate native seeds, a method known as cold stratification, which mimics the processes these species experience in the wild. Learn how to prepare winter sowing containers, choose regionally appropriate native seeds, create the right soil environment, and set up their mini-greenhouses outdoors to let winter weather do the work. As spring arrives, these seeds begin to sprout, ready to be transplanted into your yard! The program supports local biodiversity by encouraging the cultivation of native plants that attract pollinators, restore ecosystems, and reduce the impact of invasive plants. Participants gain practical gardening skills, connect with ecological stewardship, and take home containers filled with future seedlings that contribute to a healthier environment. All materials and seeds are provided. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just beginning, the Winter Seed Sowing Program offers a simple, sustainable, and rewarding way to help native species thrive—one seed at a time.
