Library Card

Library cards can be issued to anyone ages 18+ with valid photo ID. The ID must have your current address listed, however, in the event your address has changed, a bill, lease agreement or other documentation can be presented to show your current address.

Children aged 6-17 may receive their own card with a parent or guardian present. This adult must also have a valid card on file.

Any patron with a valid NC Cardinal card in good standing can check out material from Harold D. Cooley.

First card replacement is FREE. Replacements after that are $5.00 per card.

If you are an educator or participate in a home school co-op you may present ID or credentials and obtain an institution card.

Feel free to call us at 252-459-2106 with any questions.

Borrowing Library Materials

Harold D. Cooley Library houses a collection of approximately 20,000 books. We subscribe to various periodicals and newspapers covering all age groups and interests. We also have DVDs and audiobooks for both children and adults. Items are available for auto-renewal assuming there are no other patrons waiting on them. You can always call the front desk at 252-459-2106 or use your online portal to ensure items have been renewed. Library staff is also able to renew items over the phone. Through resource sharing with NC Cardinal, we may be able to get material not located at our library from other libraries throughout North Carolina. Resource sharing items typically take 1-2 weeks to arrive, at which point we will hold all materials behind the circulation desk for a period of (7) days until you are able to retrieve them.

Each card, regardless of age, can have a maximum of 50 items checked out at one time, 5 of which can be DVD's. A library card must be presented at the time of check out. If you do not have the library card in your possession, a photo ID may also be used. Library staff is unable to check out any material without a form of valid ID present.

All fines must be paid at the time of check out.

The Library currently has four (4) internet enabled desktop computers with word processing software for public use. Computer usage is limited to one hour per session. However, one additional hour may be extended assuming there are no patrons currently waiting on a device. The maximum usage of public desktops is two hours per day.

  • Public computer reservations require either an active library card OR require staff to issue a guest pass at the circulation desk.
  • Documents not saved before the computer session ends will not be accessible when a new session is created.
  • Although patron information is wiped daily after each session, it is best practice not to save personal data on publicly used equipment.
  • Minors can use public computers with the presence of a parent or legal guardian.
  • Headphones are required when watching videos to minimize noise to other patrons. Headphones are available to borrow at the front desk.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the computer area, aside from water with a closeable lid.

Four (4) of the computers are children’s computers pre-loaded with over 30 educational games.

  • No password is required for children's devices.
  • Children should not be left unattended while using computers.
