Employment Opportunity – Firefighter

The Town of Nashville is accepting applications for our Firefighter Eligibility List for full-time and part-time positions. This Firefighter position performs responsible fire suppression, rescue and incident response activities including participating in firefighting.  It may require the ability to operate fire apparatus in the absence of a Fire Engineer.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Participates in incidence response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides Emergency Medical Technician services; responds to technical rescue calls operating various equipment.

When needed and qualified, drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; insures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response.

Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; maintains equipment and re-stocks supplies as needed.

Performs maintenance and cleaning fire apparatus, equipment, station building and related facilities.

Assists with the preparation of fire reports; participates in special projects as required; participates in training, fire pre-planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, maintenance and testing of hose, pumps and hydrants and other related activities.

Participates in training on shift and when required on other occasions.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Special Requirements:

  • Possession of valid class C North Carolina driver’s license upon appointment
  • Possession of valid class B North Carolina driver’s license within twelve months of appointment
  • Possession of NC Firefighter I/II Certification upon appointment
  • Possession of North Carolina EMT Certification upon appointment
  • Ability to obtain possession of Car Seat Technician Certification within twelve months of appointment
  • Ability to obtain possession of Trench and Confined Space Certification within twenty-four months of appointment

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $28,914-$30,360 annually

  • All applications received by the closing deadline will be reviewed by Human Resources to determine if the applicant meets the minimum employment standards. Qualified candidates will be invited to take the written examination.
  • Candidates must achieve a written score of 70% or higher to be invited for the agility test.
  • Candidates must pass the agility test to be invited for an oral interview.
  • Qualified or most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral board interview.  On occasion, a written and/or verbal exercise may be required.
  • Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% in the oral board interview in order to be placed on an eligibility list.
  • The eligibility list will remain active for one year.
