Employment Opportunity – Battalion Chief

The Town of Nashville is seeking a highly motivated and dependable individual to serve as Battalion Chief. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and supervising activities of an assigned shift, which includes the management of personnel, fire prevention and training activities and oversight of major programs. This position is responsible for the mitigation of emergencies through responsive and effective management of fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous materials, and other man-made and/or natural disasters that pose a threat to public safety. Mitigation of emergencies may involve performing hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time in cramped surroundings, and in hot, smoky environments with limited visibility, and at considerable heights. Employee must be able to wear a respirator and is subject to the hazards characteristic of fire suppression work, including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employees must exercise sound judgment, tact, and initiative in all contacts. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief. Employee will be required to work 24-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. Salary Range: $36,903-$55.355.

Desirable Education and Experience

  • Graduation from a community college or university with a two-year associate degree in Fire Science or related field; must have completed the Law and Administration program; minimum of 8 years firefighter experience including at least 2 years of experience as a Lieutenant with a career department; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
  • Possession of NFPA Firefighter II, Driver/Operator/Pumps and Aerials Certifications.
  • Possession of Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification.
  • Possession of Hazardous Materials I Certification.
  • Possession of NC Fire Instructor II and NC Fire Officer II Certifications.
  • Possession of NC Confined Space and Trench Certifications.
  • Possession of Structural Collapse Certification.
