EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – ASSISTANT PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

The Town of Nashville is seeking an individual to fill the position of Assistant Public Works Director. This position performs responsible technical and supervisory work planning, organizing, and administering the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department.

Essential Duties and Tasks: Performs administrative work for a variety of municipal operations services including streets, solid waste collection, buildings and grounds, storm water, cemetery, water, and sewer operations. Work includes participating in developing budget recommendations; ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies; participating in safety and work methods training for employees; making work assignments and insuring quality work; handling citizen complaints; preparation of required reports; and coordination with and inspection of contractors on municipal projects.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public works construction methods, materials, and maintenance practices involving streets, storm water, water and sewer line maintenance and repair, and related issues. Considerable knowledge of materials and equipment used in departmental activities. Considerable knowledge of AWWA requirements and related environmental laws. Some knowledge of related engineering specifications. Knowledge of local government budgeting, purchasing, and personnel laws, regulations, and practices. Working knowledge of the application of information technology to the work of the department and related records and reports. Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment. Ability to supervise, including effective leadership, delegation, communications, motivation, performance evaluation, and coaching. Ability to establish and maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to read plans, maps, and drawings. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other town officials, citizens, contractors, and employees. Ability to present ideas effectively in writing and orally. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity necessary to read maps and diagrams, to operate a vehicle, to operate a computer, and to read and prepare reports including the analysis of data and figures.

Desirable Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in civil engineering, environmental engineering, public administration or related field; responsible work experience in public works operations and/or water and wastewater operations and supervisory and/or administrative responsibility preferred.

Salary Range: $38,748-$58,122 Annually. This is non-exempt position under FLSA.
