Employment Opportunity – Fire Chief

The Town of Nashville is seeking an individual to fill the position of Fire Chief.  This position performs supervisory and administrative work in directing the activities and personnel of the Town’s Fire Department and also serves as Safety Officer for the Town.

This position organizes and leads a variety of departmental activities to include firefighting, fire inspection, training, public education, emergency medical response, hazardous material response, emergency management response, and fire prevention in protecting the lives and property of the citizens. The Chief manages the department’s career and volunteer staff, prepares and monitors the budget, and plans and evaluates work operations.  This position participates with the Town Management and other federal, state, and local officials in planning for long-range needs for stations, equipment, and staffing and in planning for all types of emergency response; coordinates construction of facilities with architects, contractors and others.  Serves as Safety Officer for the Town including responsibility for safety inspections in all departments; coordination of OSHA compliance; identifying training needs and delivery or coordinating safety training; investigation of accidents; and coordination of the safety committee.

Applicant should have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire service management; knowledge of National Fire Protection Association Codes, OSHA regulations and safety practices and accident prevention principles and practices; emergency management planning and execution; ability to prepare clear and concise reports analyzing departmental operations; ability to communicate effectively in writing; ability to speak effectively before a group; experience in leading professional volunteers and career staff; and ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public.

Minimum Education and Experience:  Graduation from a community college with a degree in fire science or related field and completion of advanced courses and seminars in fire administration and management and considerable supervisory experience in fire suppression and/or prevention; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requirements:  Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Salary Range: $51,926 – $77,889
